Ordering the wrong size door seal is one of the most common and frustrating mistakes when replacing a fridge gasket. Getting accurate measurements is the single most important step. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure your fridge or freezer door seal so you get the right fit first time.
What You Will Need
Before you start, grab a flexible tape measure (cloth or plastic), a pen, paper or your phone to record the numbers. A rigid steel ruler is not suitable as it cannot follow the contours of the door frame accurately.
Step 1: Open the Fridge Door Fully
Open your fridge or freezer door all the way so you can see the rubber gasket clearly. This is the flexible rubber strip running around the full perimeter of the door frame. On most household fridges you'll find a single door seal; on two-door models (top or bottom freezer) each door will have its own separate seal.
Step 2: Measure the Width (Inside Dimension)
Measure the inside width of the door opening — from the inner edge of the seal groove on the left to the inner edge on the right. This is the interior cavity width, not the full width of the door itself. Measure in millimetres for the most accurate result.
Step 3: Measure the Height (Inside Dimension)
Measure the inside height of the door opening from the inner top edge of the seal groove down to the inner bottom edge. Again, this is the opening dimension, not the full outer door height.
Step 4: Measure Twice, Order Once
Always measure twice and write down both readings. If they match, you can be confident in your measurement. If they differ by more than 2–3mm, measure again to confirm.
Do You Know Your Brand and Model?
If you know your fridge brand and model number, you may not need custom measurements at all. Summit Air & Refrigeration stocks pre-made door seals for Fisher & Paykel, Westinghouse, Samsung, LG, Kelvinator, and Electrolux — these are cut to the factory specifications for your specific model. Check the label inside your fridge door or on the interior cabinet wall for the model number.
Important Disclaimer
When ordering a custom-cut seal, you are responsible for supplying accurate measurements. Summit Air & Refrigeration cannot accept returns on custom-cut seals that have been manufactured to customer-supplied measurements.
