How Often Should You Service Your Air Conditioner in the Hunter Valley?

Living in the Hunter Valley means dealing with some seriously hot summers and cool winters — and your air conditioner works hard year-round to keep you comfortable. But how often should you actually be getting it serviced? It's one of the most common questions we get asked at Summit Air & Refrigeration, and the honest answer is: more often than most people think.
The Short Answer: Once a Year, Minimum
For most residential split systems and ducted air conditioners, an annual service is the baseline recommendation. Ideally, you want this done in spring — before the Hunter Valley summer kicks in and you're relying on your system every single day. Getting it checked in October or November means any issues get sorted before the heat peaks, rather than on a 40-degree day when every technician in the region is booked solid.
Why the Hunter Valley Climate Makes Regular Servicing Even More Important
The Hunter Valley isn't the coast. Summers in Maitland, Cessnock, and the surrounding areas regularly push into the high 30s and low 40s. That's intense heat load on your system. Add to that the dust from rural properties, pollen during spring, and the occasional storm bringing in debris, and your air conditioner's filters and coils can clog up faster than you'd expect.
A clogged system doesn't just run less efficiently — it works harder to deliver the same result, driving up your power bills and putting extra strain on the compressor. Left long enough, that leads to breakdowns that could have easily been avoided.
What Happens During a Service?
A proper air conditioner service isn't just a quick filter clean. A qualified technician will clean the indoor and outdoor units, check the refrigerant levels, inspect electrical components and connections, clear the condensate drain (a blocked drain is one of the most common causes of water leaks), and test that the system is running at the correct pressures and temperatures. They'll also flag any issues before they turn into expensive repairs.
Do You Need More Frequent Servicing?
Some situations call for more regular attention. If your system runs almost continuously through summer — common in homes around Thornton and East Maitland where newer builds can heat up quickly — a service every six months is worth considering. The same goes for commercial systems in hospitality venues, offices, or industrial sites where the AC is running long hours throughout the year.
Homes with pets are another case where more frequent filter cleaning pays off — pet hair and dander can block filters surprisingly quickly and reduce airflow noticeably.
What You Can Do Between Services
You don't have to wait for a technician to keep your system running well. Cleaning or replacing the indoor filter every four to six weeks during heavy use is something most homeowners can do themselves — check your unit's manual for how to remove and wash the filter. Keep the area around your outdoor unit clear of leaves, grass clippings, and any debris that can block airflow. And if you notice anything unusual — odd smells, rattling noises, water dripping inside, or the system not cooling as well as it used to — don't ignore it. These are signs your AC needs attention sooner rather than later.
Signs Your AC Is Overdue for a Service
If it's been more than 12 months since your last service, keep an eye out for these warning signs: higher than usual electricity bills, the system taking longer to cool or heat a room, musty or stale smells when the AC is running, ice forming on the indoor or outdoor unit, and the system cycling on and off more frequently than normal. Any of these suggest it's time to book a service.
