Common glass washer faults and what they usually mean

Glasses coming out cloudy or filmed

The most common complaint and rarely a single cause. Detergent dosing too high leaves film, rinse aid dosing too low leaves spotting, and hard water leaves scale that looks like both. Worth checking dosing before assuming the machine is at fault.

Spotting and water marks after drying

Almost always rinse aid — either not dosing, dosing too little, or the dosing line has failed. Rinse aid pumps and squeeze tubes are a wear part and a common failure point.

Rinse aid draining back into the bottle

A specific and frequently missed fault. When the rinse aid pump or its squeeze tube fails, water siphons back into the container instead of dosing forward. The bottle appears to be lasting unusually well while glasses come out spotted.

Beer not holding a head

A glass that is chemically clean can still be beer dirty. Protein and detergent residue kill head retention, and the fault is usually dosing or rinse temperature rather than a mechanical failure. If lines have recently been cleaned and glasses still fail, look at the glasswasher.

Glass washer not heating, or rinse water too cool

Element, thermostat or contactor faults, or a rinse booster that is not reaching temperature. Rinse temperature matters more in a glasswasher than most operators realise — too cool and neither the sanitising nor the drying works properly.

Poor wash coverage

Blocked wash or rinse jets, worn or seized wash arms, or a wash pump losing performance. Glass racks loaded too tightly produce the same symptom and are worth ruling out first.

Glass washer not draining, or draining slowly

Drain pump faults, blocked drain lines, or debris in the tank filter. Glass washers accumulate more residue than people expect from beer, fruit and cocktail garnish.

Scale build-up in a glass washer

The underlying cause of a large share of glasswasher faults. Scale coats elements, restricts jets and dulls glass clarity. In hard water, untreated supply will destroy a glasswasher faster than the duty cycle will.

Glass washer tripping the breaker

Usually an element or a cable or termination fault rather than the machine itself. Worth proper electrical testing rather than repeated resets, since a machine that trips intermittently will keep doing it until the actual fault is found.

Norris glass washer repairs

Australian-made and manufactured at Caves Beach, just down the road in Lake Macquarie, so parts availability is good and lead times are short. The Glassmate underbench range in 10 and 15 amp is the common one behind bars.

The fault we see most is dosing. Norris's own manual is explicit that detergent and rinse aid squeeze tubes are a consumable due for replacement every six months, and that neither the tubes nor the labour to fit them is covered under warranty. Very few venues know that, so most machines are running on tubes well past their life. A perished tube stops dosing forward and lets water siphon back into the bottle — the bottle appears to last unusually well while glasses come out spotted.

Rinse temperature on these is controlled by a thermostop function, so poor rinse results usually point at the thermostat, element or scale rather than the wash side.

Washtech glass washer repairs

The most common commercial warewasher in Australian kitchens, so most of what we attend is Washtech. The manufacturer's own guidance is that the machine must be drained at least daily and any time it sits idle for more than a few hours — failing to do that causes faults including the rinse system running continually even when the tank is already full. A machine doing that usually needs draining and a few minutes standing before refill, not a part.

Beyond that: intermittent filling from a failing inlet solenoid, float switch or corroded connections, and wash pump wear on high-volume sites.

Eswood glass washer repairs

Long-established Australian brand with good parts availability, common in pubs and clubs. Typical faults are wash and rinse element failure, thermostat drift leaving rinse temperature short, door interlocks and switches, and drain pump or blocked drain line issues.

Fagor glass washer repairs

Spanish-built, still current in Australia with parts available, so an older Fagor is usually worth repairing rather than replacing. Older units run electromechanical rotary controls, which are straightforward to diagnose but wear at the switch. Rinse booster elements, thermostats and scale are the usual causes of poor rinse temperature and wet ware.

Meiko glass washer repairs

German-built, commonly the UPster range. Many are specified with optional water treatment modules such as reverse osmosis, which produce excellent glass clarity but add a service point most operators do not know about — RO membranes are a consumable and performance drops off as they age. If a Meiko that used to produce spotless glasses has gradually stopped, the machine is often fine and the water treatment is not.

Winterhalter glass washer repairs

German-built UC series, frequently specified for bars where glass presentation matters. Many are fitted with Winterhalter's integrated reverse osmosis system, and some models also carry an integrated softener. Same principle as Meiko: the integrated treatment is part of the machine and part of the service. Dosing calibration matters more on these than most, because they are designed to run on precise chemical volumes.

That means we are not restricted to one brand, and it also means warranty work needs to go through your manufacturer's appointed agent. If your machine is still under warranty, check that first — we will tell you if it is.

Water treatment — the thing that decides glass clarity

Glass clarity is a water problem more often than a machine problem.

Untreated or poorly treated water leaves scale on every heated surface and mineral deposits on every glass. It builds gradually, so the decline is easy to miss until someone complains about the beer. Filters have a service life, and a filter past its replacement date is doing nothing.

If you are replacing glass washer components more than once a year, or glass clarity keeps drifting after each service, look at the water treatment before the machine.

Glass washers in high-volume venues

A club or pub bar can run a glass washer continuously through a Friday night, which is a duty cycle domestic-grade thinking does not account for.

Things that matter at that volume:

Cycle time versus throughput. A machine that cannot keep up gets loaded wet and overfilled, which degrades results and shortens its life.
Dosing consistency. At high cycle counts, small dosing errors compound quickly.
Tank water condition. Tanks need dumping and refilling more often than most venues do it.
Filter cleaning during service, not just at close. Ten seconds during a shift prevents most drainage faults.
