Common glass washer faults and what they usually mean

Glasses coming out cloudy or filmed

The most common complaint and rarely a single cause. Detergent dosing too high leaves film, rinse aid dosing too low leaves spotting, and hard water leaves scale that looks like both. Worth checking dosing before assuming the machine is at fault.

Spotting and water marks after drying

Almost always rinse aid — either not dosing, dosing too little, or the dosing line has failed. Rinse aid pumps and squeeze tubes are a wear part and a common failure point.

Rinse aid draining back into the bottle

A specific and frequently missed fault. When the rinse aid pump or its squeeze tube fails, water siphons back into the container instead of dosing forward. The bottle appears to be lasting unusually well while glasses come out spotted.

Beer not holding a head

A glass that is chemically clean can still be beer dirty. Protein and detergent residue kill head retention, and the fault is usually dosing or rinse temperature rather than a mechanical failure. If lines have recently been cleaned and glasses still fail, look at the glasswasher.

Glass washer not heating, or rinse water too cool

Element, thermostat or contactor faults, or a rinse booster that is not reaching temperature. Rinse temperature matters more in a glasswasher than most operators realise — too cool and neither the sanitising nor the drying works properly.

Poor wash coverage

Blocked wash or rinse jets, worn or seized wash arms, or a wash pump losing performance. Glass racks loaded too tightly produce the same symptom and are worth ruling out first.

Glass washer not draining, or draining slowly

Drain pump faults, blocked drain lines, or debris in the tank filter. Glass washers accumulate more residue than people expect from beer, fruit and cocktail garnish.

Scale build-up in a glass washer

The underlying cause of a large share of glasswasher faults. Scale coats elements, restricts jets and dulls glass clarity. In hard water, untreated supply will destroy a glasswasher faster than the duty cycle will.

Glass washer tripping the breaker

Usually an element or a cable or termination fault rather than the machine itself. Worth proper electrical testing rather than repeated resets, since a machine that trips intermittently will keep doing it until the actual fault is found.

Water treatment — the thing that decides glass clarity

Glass clarity is a water problem more often than a machine problem.

Untreated or poorly treated water leaves scale on every heated surface and mineral deposits on every glass. It builds gradually, so the decline is easy to miss until someone complains about the beer. Filters have a service life, and a filter past its replacement date is doing nothing.

If you are replacing glass washer components more than once a year, or glass clarity keeps drifting after each service, look at the water treatment before the machine.

Glass washers in high-volume venues

A club or pub bar can run a glass washer continuously through a Friday night, which is a duty cycle domestic-grade thinking does not account for.

Things that matter at that volume:

  • Cycle time versus throughput. A machine that cannot keep up gets loaded wet and overfilled, which degrades results and shortens its life.

  • Dosing consistency. At high cycle counts, small dosing errors compound quickly.

  • Tank water condition. Tanks need dumping and refilling more often than most venues do it.

  • Filter cleaning during service, not just at close. Ten seconds during a shift prevents most drainage faults.

Preventative maintenance

A scheduled service typically covers:

  • Detergent and rinse aid dosing calibration

  • Rinse aid pump and squeeze tube condition

  • Wash and rinse temperature verification

  • Descaling and water filter condition

  • Wash arm, jet and filter inspection

  • Element, contactor and electrical checks

  • Door seal and hinge condition

  • Drain and pump operation

Venues on a maintenance schedule get consistent glass quality rather than a slow drift they only notice when a customer mentions it.

Installation and replacement
