Commercial Ice Machine Repairs and Servicing, Newcastle and the Hunter
Ice is food. If the machine making it is dirty, so is every drink it goes into, and your customers can't see the inside of the bin.
Summit Air and Refrigeration repairs, cleans, sanitises and maintains commercial ice machines for pubs, clubs, restaurants, aged care, seafood and hospitality venues across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast. Cubers, flakers, nugget machines and dispensers, all makes and models.
Ice machines are refrigeration equipment first. The faults that stop them are usually refrigeration, water flow or control faults, and that is our core trade. We are ARC licensed (AU56998) for refrigerant work.
Emergency breakdowns attended within 2 hours, urgent breakdowns same day. If a repair can't be finished before tonight's service, we will tell you straight away so you can organise bagged ice.
Common ice machine faults and what they usually mean
Ice machine not making ice
Start with the simple things: water supply turned off, a blocked inlet filter, or a bin control that thinks the bin is full. After that, the usual causes are a failed water inlet valve, a high pressure cut-out from a blocked condenser, a failed condenser fan motor, or a compressor or control board fault.
Producing less ice than it used to
Almost always airflow or heat. A dusty condenser, a machine jammed into a hot back bar or storeroom, or a failed fan will cut production long before the machine stops. Scale on the evaporator and a slow refrigerant leak do the same thing more gradually. Operators often put it down to the machine getting old when it just needs a proper service.
Cubes stuck together, not releasing, or the machine freezing up
A harvest fault. The machine freezes the ice but can't release it, so it keeps building until the evaporator is a solid block. Common causes are the hot gas valve, harvest assist, thermistors or sensors, and scale on the evaporator holding the ice on. Turn it off if you see this. A freeze-up left running can damage the evaporator, which is one of the most expensive parts in the machine.
Small, hollow or misshapen cubes
Usually not enough water reaching the evaporator. Blocked distribution tubes or spray nozzles, a tired water pump, a sticking float switch or low supply pressure. A partly blocked water filter produces the same symptom.
Cloudy, soft or bad tasting ice
Taste and smell problems usually come from biofilm in the water circuit, an exhausted water filter, or something stored in the ice bin that should never be there. Cloudy ice is often water quality or filtration. Soft, wet ice from a flaker or nugget machine can point to refrigeration performance.
Slime, pink or black mould in the bin or chute
Biofilm and mould, and it grows faster in warm, humid bar areas. Wiping out the bin does not fix it, because the source is usually the evaporator, water trough, pump, tubes and chute, which staff can't reach. It needs a full clean and sanitise of the water circuit.
Water leaking from the ice machine
A blocked or poorly falling drain, a cracked water trough, an overflowing sump, a failed drain pump, or a split water line. Check the floor drain before assuming it is the machine.
Grinding, squealing or knocking from a flaker or nugget machine
Flakers and nugget machines use an auger that pushes ice through a freezing cylinder. Worn bearings, a failing gearbox or scale in the cylinder put the auger under load and make noise first, then stop. Caught early, it is a bearing job. Left to run, it can take out the gearbox or auger.
Flashing lights, error codes or tripping the breaker
Most modern machines report faults as codes or light patterns, and the code narrows the fault quickly. A machine tripping a breaker needs proper electrical testing rather than repeated resets.
Cleaning and sanitising: the part most venues skip
There are three different jobs, and they are often confused:
-
Cleaning removes film and residue.
-
Descaling removes mineral build-up from the evaporator and water circuit.
-
Sanitising kills the bacteria and mould left behind, and only works on surfaces that are already clean.
Most manufacturers specify a full clean and sanitise at least once a year, and most commercial sites need it every six months or more often. Our ice machine sanitise service covers:
-
Emptying and discarding stored ice
-
Descaling and cleaning the evaporator and water circuit using the manufacturer's approved chemicals
-
Removing, cleaning and sanitising the water trough, distribution tubes, curtains, chutes and bin
-
Sanitising all ice contact surfaces and the bin door and gasket
-
Cleaning the condenser and checking fan operation
-
Checking the water filter and replacing it if due
-
Checking harvest operation, ice quality and drain function before we leave
Every sanitise visit leaves you with a dated service record, so you can show your cleaning history when an environmental health officer asks.
Water in Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast
Most of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie is on Hunter Water's supply, which is soft. That means scale builds more slowly here than in harder water areas, and the more common problems are hygiene and airflow rather than heavy scale.
It is a different story on tank, bore or dam water, which is common at Hunter Valley wineries, function venues and rural sites. Ice has to be made from potable water, and those supplies may need testing and treatment before they go anywhere near an ice machine. If you are not on town water, tell us when you book and we will look at filtration and treatment as part of the service.
Water filters are a consumable. A filter past its replacement date is doing nothing, and a blocked one starves the machine of water.
Ice machines we service
Cube ice machines
Modular cubers on storage bins, and self-contained undercounter machines. The workhorse of bars, clubs and restaurants.
Flake ice machines
Used for seafood and meat displays, salad bars and food preparation. They run hard and are auger driven, so bearing and gearbox condition matters.
Nugget ice machines and dispensers
Soft, chewable ice used widely in aged care and hospitals, and in drinks service. Hygiene matters more here than anywhere, because the ice often goes to vulnerable people.
Ice and water dispensers
Self-serve units in hotels, workplaces and healthcare. The dispense chute and spout are contact points that need regular sanitising.
We service air-cooled, water-cooled and remote condenser machines.
Brands we repair
We service all makes and models of commercial ice machine, including Hoshizaki, Scotsman, Manitowoc, Ice-O-Matic, Follett, Brema, Bromic, Lassele and Koolaire.
We are an independent service company and hold no manufacturer warranty agency. That means we are not tied to one brand, and it also means warranty work needs to go through your manufacturer's appointed agent. If your machine is still under warranty, check that first. We will tell you if we think it is.
How often should an ice machine be serviced?
Frequency depends on how hard the machine works and where it sits. As a starting point:
-
High volume pubs, clubs and cocktail bars: clean and sanitise every 3 to 6 months, technical service every 6 months
-
Aged care, hospitals and healthcare: clean and sanitise every 3 to 6 months, technical service every 6 months
-
Seafood, butchers and supermarket flakers: clean and sanitise every 3 to 6 months, technical service every 6 months
-
Restaurants and cafes: clean and sanitise every 6 months, technical service annually
-
Low use sites, offices and seasonal venues: clean and sanitise at least annually, technical service annually
Machines in hot, humid or dusty spots, or on untreated water, need the shorter end of the range.
Between visits, your staff can do a lot: keep the scoop out of the bin, never store food or drinks in the bin, wipe the bin door and gasket, and rinse the condenser filter monthly on air-cooled machines. We are happy to show your team how on the first visit.
Maintenance programs
We build one maintenance program per site rather than selling fixed packages. Ice machines can be added to a program covering your coolrooms and refrigeration, glass washers and beer lines, so one visit covers the lot.
Sites on a maintenance program get:
-
Guaranteed priority response
-
Door seals and gaskets measured and held for your equipment, so a failed seal can be fitted on the same visit
-
An asset register and an annual replacement forecast, so an ageing ice machine is budgeted for rather than a surprise
Who we look after
-
Pubs, clubs, bars and bottle shops
-
Restaurants, cafes and function venues
-
Hotels, motels and resorts
-
Aged care facilities and hospitals
-
Seafood outlets, butchers and supermarkets
-
Wineries and Hunter Valley event venues
-
Sports clubs, gyms and workplaces
Installation and replacement
We supply and install commercial ice machines, and we carry out all work up to the point of connection. Final electrical and plumbing point-of-connection work is completed by a licensed subcontractor we organise.
Worth checking before you buy:
-
Size for your busiest day, not your average one. Summer Saturdays and functions are when an undersized machine runs out.
-
Air-cooled machines need clear space for airflow and a room that doesn't cook. Behind a bar or in a closed storeroom, a remote or water-cooled condenser may be the better choice.
-
A drain with proper fall, a water supply with a filter, and the right power supply.
-
Ice type: cubes for drinks, flake for display, nugget for healthcare and soft drinks.
If you are deciding whether an older machine is worth repairing, we will give you an honest answer. Parts availability and the condition of the evaporator and compressor usually decide it.

Ice machine questions
How often should a commercial ice machine be cleaned and sanitised?
Most manufacturers specify at least once a year. Most commercial sites need it every six months, and high volume bars, aged care and seafood outlets every three to six months.
Can my staff clean the ice machine themselves?
Staff can and should wipe the bin, door and gasket, and rinse the condenser filter on air-cooled machines. A full sanitise means taking apart and cleaning the evaporator, water circuit and chute, which is best done by a technician.
Why is there slime or black mould in my ice machine?
Bacteria and mould grow on the wet surfaces inside the machine, especially in warm bar areas. Wiping the bin removes what you can see but not the source. A full clean and sanitise of the water circuit is needed.
Why has my ice machine stopped making ice?
Common causes are a water supply or filter problem, a bin control reading full, a blocked condenser tripping the high pressure switch, a failed fan, or a harvest fault. Check the water is on and the condenser is clear, then call us.
Do you repair ice machines under warranty?
We are independent and hold no manufacturer warranty agency. Warranty work goes through the manufacturer's appointed agent. For machines out of warranty, we repair all makes and models.
Do you offer emergency ice machine repairs?
Yes. Emergency breakdowns are attended within 2 hours and urgent breakdowns the same day, across Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast.
Is it worth repairing an old ice machine?
Often, yes. If the evaporator and compressor are sound and parts are available, a repair usually costs far less than replacement. We will give you an honest recommendation either way.
