What Newcastle sites throw at refrigeration
Two things shape refrigeration work in Newcastle more than anything else.
Salt air. Anywhere from Newcastle East through Merewether and down the coast, condensers corrode faster than the manufacturer's service interval assumes. Fin damage and coil corrosion cut capacity long before the unit actually fails, so the first sign is usually a system working harder and holding temperature worse rather than a breakdown. Coastal sites need condenser inspection and cleaning more often than inland ones, and coated coils are worth specifying on replacement.
Density. CBD and inner-suburb venues often run plant in tight rooftop or laneway spaces with poor airflow and difficult access. Undersized or badly located condensers are common, and a system that struggles every January is usually an airflow problem rather than a refrigeration fault.
Equipment we cover in Newcastle
Coolrooms and freezer rooms, display fridges and cabinets, underbench and upright commercial fridges, ice machines, glycol and beer systems, keg rooms, and refrigerated prep benches. We also manufacture and supply door seals, so a failed coolroom or display fridge seal gets measured and fitted rather than ordered in and waited on.
Commercial Refrigeration FAQs
How often should commercial refrigeration be serviced?
Most commercial sites should be on a scheduled service every quarterly, and high-load sites such as busy kitchens, clubs and anywhere with a lot of door traffic are better on monthly basis. The interval matters less than what gets done. A service that does not include condenser cleaning, refrigerant charge assessment, door seal condition and temperature verification is not doing the work that prevents breakdowns. Coastal Newcastle sites need condenser attention more often than the manufacturer's schedule suggests, because salt air degrades coils faster than inland conditions.
Why does my coolroom hold temperature all year but struggle in summer?
Almost always condenser capacity rather than a fault. Refrigeration systems are sized against a design ambient temperature, and when the air around the condenser exceeds it, the system loses capacity exactly when you need it most. Common causes are a dirty or corroded condenser, poor airflow around a unit installed in a tight space, a failed condenser fan, or a system that was undersized to begin with. If it happens every January and nothing else is wrong, look at airflow and condenser condition first.
How quickly can you attend a breakdown?
Emergency breakdowns are attended within 2 hours across Newcastle, the Hunter and the Central Coast. Urgent breakdowns are attended same day.
Do I need an ARC certified technician?
Yes. Any work involving refrigerant handling in Australia legally requires ARC certification. Summit holds ARC Licence AU56998. It is worth checking, because uncertified refrigerant work is both illegal and a genuine risk to your equipment and your insurance position.
Should I choose self-contained or remote condensing?
Self-contained units have the compressor and condenser built into the cabinet. They are cheaper to buy, simpler to install and easy to relocate, but they reject heat straight into the room, which matters in a kitchen already fighting for temperature, and they run noisier in customer-facing spaces. Remote systems put the condenser outside or on the roof. Heat and noise leave the room, capacity is generally better, and servicing does not disturb trade. The trade-off is higher installation cost and pipework that has to be run properly. For a single display fridge, self-contained is usually right. For a coolroom, a bank of cabinets, or anything in a hot kitchen or a quiet dining room, remote is usually worth the extra.
Is it worth repairing or replacing?
The questions worth asking are the age of the system, what refrigerant it runs, and whether the failure is a component or the compressor. Component failures on a system under about ten years old are usually worth repairing. Compressor failure on an older system rarely is, particularly if it runs a phased-down refrigerant where the gas alone is now a significant part of the cost. The other factor is whether it has failed before. A compressor that has gone twice in two years is not a compressor problem, it is a system problem, and replacing the compressor a third time will not fix it.
Why does my compressor keep failing?
Repeat compressor failure is nearly always a symptom rather than the fault. The usual causes are a controller cycling the system too rapidly, refrigerant undercharge or overcharge, poor condenser airflow, restricted expansion valve, or moisture in the system that was never properly removed after a previous repair. Replacing the compressor without finding the underlying cause buys you a few months. Diagnosing the cause first is cheaper than the third compressor.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. We provide scheduled preventative maintenance programs tailored to the site, covering condenser cleaning, refrigerant and electrical checks, door seal condition, temperature verification and fault reporting. Sites on a maintenance schedule get fewer breakdowns, and the breakdowns they do get tend to happen at a manageable time rather than mid-service.
